BRAVE Ellie Taylor was hailed a lifesaver after leading her family to safety when fire broke out at their Oakwell home.

Schoolgirl Ellie heard the smoke alarm go off in the middle of the night and woke her parents, Gail and David, brother Brad and younger sister Gracie before helping them get out of their home on Coniston Road.

The family went outside in their pyjamas after Ellie woke her parents - at the time, mum Gail said Ellie's quick-thinking had saved the family's lives.

The fire is thought to have started when the fridge freezer caught fire in a utility room.

Ellie acted on fire safety advice she had been given as a 'switch off monitor' at Queen's Road Academy where she is a pupil.

One fireman told the family the flow of smoke was stemmed by the doors Ellie closed, allowing the family extra time to escape.

She has been nominated in the Young Superstar Catergory for the Proud of Barnsley awards.
