BREASTFEEDING is officially welcome at Barnsley museums and parks according to Barnsley Council.

The Barnsley Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme includes the council’s museums and parks, and an event to celebrate their inclusion in the scheme will be held at the Cooper Gallery on Thursday from 1pm to 3pm.

Coun Jim Andrews, the council’s public health spokesman, said: “Breastfeeding has been shown to improve relationships between mother and child and brain development. We want to celebrate those close loving relationships which the act of breast-feeding can help develop.

“The Welcome Here scheme helps to signpost families to places where they are able to feed their babies in welcoming, comfortable and relaxed environments.”

Members of the public are welcome at the event and those who take their babies and young children will be invited to make hand and foot prints of babies which will be used for an information and celebration display.

Any venue open to the public is invited to sign up to the Welcome Here scheme. Venues receive online training which provides guidance to ensuring a welcoming environment for breast-feeding families. Venues are also listed on an online directory of breastfeeding-friendly places across the borough.
