Worsbrough Bridge manager Lee Morris is delighted his side have surpassed last season’s points tally at the halfway stage and is now focused on a promotion push.

Worsbrough’s 3-1 home win over Skegness Town on Saturday took them up to 34 points from 19 NCEL Division One matches which is one more than they picked up in 42 games last season.

Another win tomorrow would mean they have more points than in any of their last three campaigns in which they have battled relegation and finished with fewer than a point per game. It is a significant turnaround for the club who have suffered with financial difficulties and briefly left their Park Road ground to play at Grimethorpe and Maltby.

Morris said: “To have more points than last season by November is a fantastic achievement for the club and the team. Worsbrough Bridge has been one of the lesser clubs in Barnsley football for a few years with Shaw Lane, Athersley Rec and Penistone Church all going ahead of us.

“So it’s nice to get a smile back on the faces of the volunteers and the local people who are starting to come back in larger numbers to watch the team. We are moving forward on and off the pitch.”

Bridge are now sixth, just five points behind leaders Campion who have played two fewer games than the Barnsley club.  Morris said: “We’re exactly halfway through the season and a lot can still happen. We’re getting close to two points per game which is promotion form.

“We have had a great start and, even though we haven’t achieved anything yet, I still have to give the lads a lot of credit. This team can definitely get in the top two. All the sides in the top six are dropping points and it’s just a question of who goes on a good run.”
