BARNSLEY Council received a special certificate from the Royal British Legion yesterday for being one of only two councils in the country that allows Poppy Appeal volunteers to collect for three weeks.

It was handed over to the Mayor of Barnsley Jeff Ennis by local Royal British Legion representative Goff Griffiths before a meeting of the full council.

Goff told councillors: “There are only two councils in the whole of Britain, Spain and France that give three-week street licences so we can stand and sell for three weeks.

“We have a number of councils that give seven days or three days and it is Barnsley and Thanet who give the longest.

“We feel this council deserves some recognition for that and we have a certificate from the national team leader for the Poppy Appeal.”

Goff went on to explain how much the Legion values the council’s support and the efforts of councillors and other staff who volunteer for the appeal which this year raised £91,000.
