TWO brothers on Brierley Town Council have announced ambitious plans to build a wind turbine and other renewable electricity generation systems in Grimethorpe to lower people's bills.

Couns Tony and Eddie Devoy have set up a company with the intention of installing a wind turbine, and later more experimental technologies including harnessing energy from the water in disused mine workings. They are seeking funding of about £1 million.

They have set up the North East Barnsley Sustainable Communities Initiative (NEBSCI) and are working on funding applications to be able to produce sustainable energy in areas around Grimethorpe, Brierely, Great Houghton and Shafton.

The plans were discussed at Brierley Town Council's meeting.

Director and secretary of the company, Tony Devoy said: "It would certainly help to bring down energy bills if everything goes ahead in the plan.

"We don't want to promise people this but it would definitely help to lower costs."
