One of Barnsley's Wembley heroes will not be returning to the club and has instead joined Lee Johnson's Bristol City.

Midfielder Josh Brownhill, 20, who started the game against Millwall on Sunday, has opted to join Barnsley's Championship rivals after his contract at Preston North End expired.

It is likely Brownhill will cost City a compensation fee as Preston wanted him to stay at Deepdale and reportedly offered him a new deal.

But Brownhill, who netted in Barnsley's second leg semi final play-off win over Walsall, has signed a two year deal, with the option of a third at Ashton Gate.

Johnson said: "Josh is a young, hungry, sought-after player who is experienced beyond his years in modern day football, and we’ve beaten off competition from other clubs to get him.

“On a human level, as well as being a good footballer he’s also a fantastic character – one of the nicest guys you could meet – and he’s very determined to do well for Bristol City.”
