A THIEF has been jailed for 57 months after admitting a Christmas Day burglary.

Andrew Conway, 40, of Bromfield Court, Royston, denied breaking into the home of James Roberts, of Bisley Grove, Royston, early on December 25 last year, but changed his plea to guilty at the start of his trial this week.

Conway stole Christmas presents and even a joint of meat before driving away in Mr Roberts’s Mazda 3, which was later recovered by police.

Mr Roberts, 30, said: “It’s everyone’s worst nightmare waking up on Christmas morning to find out you’ve been burgled.

“It was a terrible ordeal. I heard a noise but the house is semi-detached so I thought it was just a neighbour.

“I went downstairs in the morning and everything was out of place. It hadn’t been ransacked, but the presents were gone. This sentence has given closure and I hope the prison sentence will make him reform.”
