A MAIN road in and out of the town centre may remain closed for days after a burst water main caused serious damage.

Old Mill Lane was closed after the burst in the early hours of this morning.

Workers began fixing the pipe at around 7.30am but said that it would take several days due to the damage the water has caused.

Graham Parks, supervisor for Morrison Utilities Services (contractors for Yorkshire Water), said: “It was a nine-inch water pipe that burst on Old Mill Lane and we are working hard to fix this quickly.

“Unfortunately, what takes the most time is the consequential damage this has caused to the road.

“We are trying to get the road opened as fast as possible and we are grateful for everyone’s patience.”

The road is closed between Longman Road and Caxton Street with diversions in place until repairs to the road can be completed.

Yorkshire Water confirmed that the repairs to the damage is likely to take a few days.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: “Due to the size of the burst, it’s caused quite a bit of damage to the road surface which has meant we’ve had to close the road from the junction of Longman Road to County Way. Diversions are in place and will remain until we complete the repairs and put the road back to normal.

“We’ll be working as quickly as we can to do this, but work is likely to take a few days. We’d like to thank residents in the area for the patience.”

A Barnsley Council spokesman said residents were urged ‘to allow extra time for the journey’.
