WIDESPREAD cuts to bus services could leave Penistone without a direct service to Barnsley Hospital and other villages will also lose their direct links to Sheffield and Barnsley if the proposals go ahead.
Consultations have now started on the proposals but a protest meeting has already been arranged in Penistone next week to try to challenge the plans, which have been drawn up by the Barnsley Bus Partnership - a body involving Barnsley Council, bus operators and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
The only alternative to the services expected to be axed is a potential ‘community bus service’ but no decision will be made on that until the results of consultation work have been analysed and at this stage no details have been released on how it might be financed or operated.
