NEW parking measures brought in by a supermarket in Royston is threatening to drive custom out of the village, it has been claimed.

The Co-op, on High Street, has entered into an enforcement contract with Horizon Parking, whose attendants will patrol the car park to keep tabs on motorists flouting its rules.

Warning signs were installed last Friday around the car park, advising those using it that it is for Co-op customers only and anyone caught disobeying that or exceeding the two-hour limit will receive a £70 fine - a move the retailer says is a ‘last resort’.

Les Neil, of Superbodies Gym, which is adjacent to the car park, blasted the Co-op’s changes and told the Chronicle it will have a knock-on effect on Royston’s other businesses.

“It’s always been a public car park and businesses are very disappointed with their decision,” he said. “I’ve parked there for 30 years and it will have a serious effect on customers.”
