The people of Royston need to know 'the truth' about plans for new supermarkets in Royston, a councillor has said.
An Aldi spokesman confirmed plans for a store on the former spring factory site on High Street. Plans will be unveiled at a public consultation event on Thursday from 3pm to 7pm at the Alexandra Working Men's Club.
Coun Tim Cheetham said: "People may or may not welcome it. But how can they be expected to give their opinion on whether they want this, if we don't know what is happening on the old Royston High School site?"
Houses are already being built on that site after planning permission was granted last year for houses, a supermarket, petrol station and medical centre. Coun Cheetham said news of the supermarket on the high school site has gone quiet.
"What we are led to believe is the health centre, and all of the interested supermarkets, have pulled out. "The planning permission was for the scheme s a whole, so it looks like they're going to have to come back with a pretty major redesign. There was huge public opposition to it all in the first place.
"If the people of Royston are going to be asked about plans for another supermarket down the road, they can't make a rational decision until we know what's happening.
"I've made requests to the council and developer but nobody has been available for comment. The people of Royston need the truth."
