A CAMPAIGNER is set to undertake a 24-hour cycle ride around a Barnsley park which could be carved up under plans to create a new one-way gyratory system.

Peter Giles, of Lancaster Street, will ride around Penny Pie Park in Pogmoor on the weekend before Barnsley Council’s planning board members meet to potentially decide the fate of the £4.3m scheme which aims to reduce congestion along Dodworth Road.

The 66-year-old hopes to raise awareness of the plan, which could see the popular park lose some of its greenspace to make way for the road.

“The sponsored cycle ride is something I want to do the weekend before the planning board meet on October 23,”Peter told the Chronicle.

“The money raised from that will hopefully go towards improvements on the park if the gyratory is refused, but if not it will go to Bluebell Wood, the children’s hospice.

“A lot of people will be affected by the council’s planned gyratory, not just the park’s users but also hundreds of residents whose homes are nearby.”
