THE funeral of prolific campaigner and trade union activist Dave Gibson will be followed by a celebratory rally at the Civic instead of a wake.

Dave, of Western Street, Barnsley, died last week after a short battle with cancer. His partner of 16 years Kate Burland said Dave, who was well known for addressing politically charged crowds with a megaphone on a range of issues, would not have wanted a traditional or religious funeral service.

It will take place at Barnsley Crematorium on Thursday August 3 at 10.50am. "Strictly no flowers, and it's casual dress," said Kate.

"It will be entirely non-religious and run by family, friends and comrades. We're going to follow it with a celebration of his life and political activism at Barnsley Civic from 12.30pm.

"There will be a microphone and a lectern, and anybody who wants to speak can do so."

Kate said she had been overwhelmed with the number of messages she had received since Dave's death and has set up a dedicated email address davegibsontribute@gmail.com for anyone who wishes to get in touch.
