Jamal Campbell-Ryce hopes that, by 5pm tomorrow, he is no longer the last man to score a winner for Barnsley at Hillsborough.

The winger netted a sensational solo goal in the Reds’ 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday in February 2009, during a 100-game spell which lasted two and a half years. He had also scored earlier that season in the Oakwell win over the Owls – with that double being the Reds’ only wins over their bitter local rivals in 18 years.

Campbell-Ryce told the Chronicle: “That was probably the best game of my career, definitely one of the best. To go to Hillsborough – with the hate between the two clubs – and score a goal like that, it was an unbelievable feeling and a fantastic memory.

“When I picked up the ball, my first thought as a winger was to beat my man. Then it all opened up for me and I managed to put my shot in the top corner. The fans were always fantastic with me but they seemed to like me even more after that. Barnsley is one of my favourite clubs, I had an amazing time there and that goal is a real highlight.  We were always the underdogs against Wednesday so it was nice to beat them not just once but twice.”

Barnsley are now due to visit Hillsborough tomorrow, hoping to make it back-to-back wins this season following a 1-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday. Campbell-Ryce said: “It’s the start of the season so it always takes five or six games to get into your stride. It can be vital to get some early points. Barnsley are definitely capable of getting a result there, especially after their win against Fulham. Anything can happen in the Championship. I will be hoping they can get a win like we did in 2009.”
