DON’T wait, get checked out.

That’s the message from Barnsley woman Joan Watson who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

Joan, 72, of Middlecliffe Lane, Little Houghton, had found small lumps in her breast and assumed they were cysts. She mentioned it to her GP and said she would wait until her mammogram eight months later, but the doctor insisted she be checked the very next day.

Joan said: “I felt fit and healthy, I’d been to the gym that morning. I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. I didn’t for one minute think it might be cancer.

“I mentioned it to my GP but told them I was fine to wait for my next mammogram in eight months. The GP insisted I get it checked out the next day. They found I had breast cancer.

“My advice is don’t wait, as soon as you suspect anything, get it checked out.”

Macmillan Cancer Support is urging people to look for lumps or changes to the breast including the size or shape of the breast and changes to the nipple or skin.

Macmillan’s mobile service will be at Better Barnsley, 5-7 Cheapside between 10-4pm on October 31 and November 1. The team of cancer information specialists will be on hand to answer questions, provide support and inform people about local services.
