A CANNABIS farm was discovered in a restaurant while it was being repossessed.

Italian restaurant Boccellis on Grange Lane, Stairfoot, was repossessed by owner Malcolm Lister.

He entered the building on June 25 following concerns the tenant was illegally subletting the property and because he claimed he was owed rent.

Mr Lister discovered the cannabis behind a locked door on the ground floor of the building, formerly known as the Mill of the Black Monks.

He said: “There was a padlock on a door and behind that there were two rooms just full of these plants

“There was a man sleeping in another room with blocked windows. Damage has been made to the building, including broken windows and fan units ripped from the walls.”

Both the tenant and people sub-letting it have denied any knowledge of the cannisbis farm. Both parties also claim they paid the rent.

A police spokesman said that a report was received on June 25 regarding a number of cannabis plants in a building on Grange Lane. CSI officers attended and enquiries are ongoing. No arrests have been made at this stage.
