A BUSY railway line was closed for more than 18 hours this week after a car made its way onto the tracks between Sheffield and Huddersfield.

An investigation has been launched by British Transport Police, who were called to reports of a car on the tracks near Wellhouse tunnel, Penistone, at approximately 6.30pm on Tuesday.

The incident resulted in trains being delayed until midday on Wednesday while emergency services removed the silver Toyota Rav4 - which is thought to have crashed down a steep embankment from the road above - from the track.

Its tricky position proved a challenge for officers on the scene, as the tracks are below ground level, and coaches were subsequently put on by train operator Northern while the removal operation took place.

A spokesman from the British Transport Police said: “Officers attended to a man in his 80s, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, who was airlifted to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged and the car has since been removed from the tracks.

“Anyone who witnessed what happened is asked to contact BTP by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 524 of May 8.”
