A CAR park in Barnsley town centre has finally closed almost six months after the council ordered it should be shut down.

Property developer Wayne Hadfield had been utilising the land between two railway bridges in Old Mill Lane as a 250-space car park for ten months until the council informed him he would have to apply for retrospective planning permission.

Wayne, 50, of Croft Farm, Willowbank, made the application in December last year. But it was turned down on safety grounds.

The gates of the car park were closed and padlocked this week with Mr Hadfied maintaining the closure was down purely to the fact that he charged less to park than did the council.
