A DATE has been set for the demolition of the multi-storey car park in Barnsley town centre.

Council papers outlining spending plans for 2016/17 reveal the car park will be flattened in April 2018 as part of the town centre regeneration.

Initial plans were to start knocking down the multi-storey car park after Christmas, but have been put back until later in the Better Barnsley project so that existing indoor traders can be moved into the former semi-open market area on the ground floor of the car park while work on the Metropolitan Centre is carried out.

This is scheduled to take place in March next year and will operate for 18 months until the refurbishment of the Metropolitan Centre is complete and traders can relocate back into the centre.
