A CARE home is serving up the fun and good times at its own residents-only pub.

Marie Shaw, manager at Wombwell’s Valley Park care home, came up with the idea of converting an unused room at the home into a pub complete with bar, dart board, card table and dominoes.

She’ll be serving up beer and lager, wine and a selection of spirits - all to be enjoyed in moderation of course.

“It’s just like a good old-fashioned pub,” she said. “We’ll have a few crisps and nuts, and I can even arrange a sticky carpet if they want.”

“I wanted to do this because I’ve got quite a few older gents particularly who want to get together and play cards, cribbage and dominoes.

“It’s somewhere for them to get together and chat and socialise. Ladies too of course.”

And how much has all of this costs? “No more than £100,” said Marie. “We’ve had so much help it’s been fantastic.”

The bar has been built by handyman Dave Hantzman, who also decorated the room. Donations of pumps, beer mats and other bar room nick-nacks along with the donation of pint pots from the Last Orders pub across the road have all meant its been achievable without any real budget.

“I’m really pleased with the results,” said Marie. “It looks just like a real pub, and better than I expected.”

Mayor of Barnsley Coun Jeff Ennis is going to declare it officially open next week.
