A NEW care service for people who are not well enough to be in hospital could spell the end for Mount Vernon Hospital.

People not ill enough to stay in Barnsley Hospital but not well enough to return home are currently sent to Mount Vernon, in Worsbrough Common, which has 48 beds.

But from July, the new service will see more people supported at home and in care homes.

Sean Rayner, of South West Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust, said care can be better provided closer to people’s homes.

He said: “At present it looks like intermediate care can be better provided closer to people’s homes, rather than from Mount Vernon Hospital. This means that the hospital isn’t likely to have a long term future. We must stress, however, that no decision has been made and there is lots more work to do.”
