AMEY has taken over the facilities management of 11 secondary schools in Barnsley which were previously run by Carillion.

The new contract will see the firm deliver caretaking, cleaning and grounds and building maintenance due to Carillion’s insolvency.

Schools including Darton College; Kirk Balk Academy; Penistone; Outwood Academy Carlton; The Dearne; Greenacre SEN; Outwood Academy Shafton; Springwell; Holy Trinity; Horizon Community College and Netherwood ALC make up the Barnsley list.

Chief executive of Amey, Andy Milner, said: “We are pleased to be taking on this contract as it further strengthens our position in the education sector. Our understanding of facilities management operations within schools means we are perfectly placed to deliver a service that is sustainable and efficient.

“We are looking forward to welcoming 230 new employees to our business and working with both Barnsley Local Education Partnership and Barnsley Council.”

David Shepherd, director of regeneration and property at Barnsley Council, added: “Our primary focus is making sure every child attends a good school and is successful in their learning.

“We’re pleased that this appointment means jobs have been safeguarded and that services for schools will continue.”
