BIG hearted Barnsley bar owner Paul Simpson is helping to save one of Britain's rarest horse breeds after reading an appeal on the internet.

Paul Simpson - known to his many friends as Si - saw a post on Facebook made by Jackie Storrs of Wood View Cudworth detailing how the Hackney breed of horses faced extinction.

And he was quick to put his hand in his pocket.

Jackie explained the breed had been placed on the critical list and made the appeal after one of the last few supporters of the breed died suddenly which meant his horses would have to be auctioned off.

Si, who owns Wildcats in Wellington Street and lives in Barnsley, said: "I saw the post made by a Facebook acquaintance who I had done some building work for.

"I'm a keen historian and all for British heritage and culture but horses isn't a subject I'm coherent with but as an animal lover I read the article and thought I can help somehow."
