A NATURE reserve described as a ‘little gem’ in Barnsley has received a platinum award from Yorkshire in Bloom - the highest accolade judges can give.

Having bagged a gold at last year’s competition, Carlton Marsh went one step further and walked away with the top prize at an awards ceremony held at York Racecourse on Tuesday.

Judges commended the site’s volunteers - the Friends of Carlton Marsh - whose year-round work has created a ‘wonderful’ attraction where wildlife thrives.

“This site has everything anyone could ever want from a nature reserve,” the judging report said. “Everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime as it’s such a wonderful place to go to.”

Coun Charlie Wraith added: “Carlton Marsh goes from strength to strength and the platinum award is absolutely deserved. It’s the jewel in Barnsley’s crown and is a true credit to the area.”
