MORE than £140,000 will be set aside to create new school places by a developer building almost 100 houses in Lundwood.

Steve Gamble made the application to Barnsley Council to build 97 houses with garages and parking spaces on a three hectare site at Ellwood, off Wilson Grove.

The development includes an area of public open space and will be made up of mainly two and three-bedroom homes and six, four-bedroom houses.

As part of the approval, Mr Gamble has agreed to provide financial contributions towards both recreational provision and education.

Lundwood has the highest area of demand for primary school places and creating new places is a pressing matter across the borough.

With schools in Lundwood already operating at capacity, the £140,480 to be handed over by the developer will be used to either build a new classroom or go towards providing additional places by refurbishing existing accommodation.
