Dimitri Cavare is aware of the criticism from some Barnsley fans of his workrate and ability but believes he is improving.

The Guadeloupe-born right-back, who will be 24 on Tuesday, joined the Reds from French top flight club Rennes after a spell at RC Lens with Gauthier Ganaye who later became Oakwell chief executive before leaving yesterday.

In his first press conference with the club, Cavare said: “We have good fans in Barnsley, at home and even in away games it feels like we are at home.

“Sometimes it is funny on Twitter, sometimes it is bad. If I am not good on the pitch, they can say what they think and it is no problem. They say ‘Cavare is lazy, Cavare is stupid’. Sometimes if I run all the way up the pitch, I am tired when I run back.”

He mentioned the incident when he set up Alex Mowatt’s opener against Peterborough United on Boxing Day.

“I heard supporters booing me because they thought I was taking too long then I got the assist and they all cheered.”

Cavare started just seven Championship matches as the club was relegated last season but he has started 28 of their 29 League One fixtures so far this season.

“I am very happy to play this season because last season was not like this. For my confidence and my form it is good to be playing. I am a young player and I had a big injury to my knee in France which was a tough time.

“At my age, I have to play in the best level I can and I want to get back to the Championship and stay there. Sometimes it is not easy because we play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday but I have to keep going and be consistent.

“I am having more good games and I am in good form. I have to keep playing like I am and I will help the team. I think I can be even better in the future. I need to work on my crossing, finishing and my one-against-one defending.”
