A CCTV camera has had to be installed at Hoyland’s new West Street car park because of problems with ‘boy racers’ congregating at night.

The problem has now been made a priority for police responsible for the Hoyland district.

Those involved are said to be older teenagers, old enough to drive, who have been blamed for causing litter problems in the car park as well as “wheel spinning around” when they gather there.

There are also concerns that the car park is being misused as a ‘cut through’ by motorists who want to avoid driving around the town centre one day system.

Fiona Tennyson, the Barnsley Council tasking officer who works with police on community safety issues, said live cameras had been installed at the car park because of the problem.

“It started with late teens, of driving age, gathering there. Then they were littering,” she said.
