CCTV cameras at a town centre underpass have been welcomed by businesses who say they will restore public confidence in using the area.

Barnsley Council has installed three cameras covering each entrance to the underpass, which is a main pedestrian thoroughfare from the Alhambra Centre to Old Doncaster Road, Westway and Sheffield Road.

The move follows concerns raised by the public about safety, antisocial behaviour and people drinking and openly taking drugs in the area. It was also where a 13-year-old girl claimed she was raped in June last year. An investigation by detectives concluded the incident never took place.

The security cameras will run 24 hours a day and officers from the council’s community safety team are able to access them and download any footage needed. Three more CCTV units have also been installed in Peel Square.
