Barnsley have signed centre-back Adam Jackson from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old signed on a three-year contract after impressing under former Reds superstar Craig Hignett on loan at League Two Hartlepool last season.

The Middlesbrough youth product, who represented England at under 16, 17, 18 and 19 level, played 33 games for Pool, scoring three goals.

A Barnsley statement reads: "After beating off competition from a number of rival clubs, Adam joins the Reds from Premier League side Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee and will go straight into the first team squad. At just 22-years-old, Darlington born Jackson has built a solid reputation as a tall, powerful, ball playing centre half with an eye for goal."

He joins Marc Roberts and Angus MacDonald as the Reds' centre-backs, with Alfie Mawson set to sign for Premier League Swansea before tomorrow's deadline.
