A CENTRE for severely disabled people has been saved from closure after a local group stepped in to keep it open.

Clubs, quizzes, activities and volunteer work will still be offered to people with disabilities after Physical Futures took over the lease of the Carlton Centre.

The centre, on Spring Lane, was earmarked for closure by Barnsley Council and the Disabilities Trust, which owns and previously operated the centre, because of a fall in the number of people using it.

The Carlton Centre effectively closed on Saturday and three members of staff were made redundant, but the centre will remain open under the new lease and will be called Physical Futures.
