CHANGES are being made to wards at Barnsley Hospital to help reduce the amount of time staff and patients spend travelling around the hospital.

The acute medical unit - where patients are admitted from accident and emergency - will move closer to A and E, also making it closer to intensive care and the imaging department where scans and x-rays are carried out.

The surgical assessment unit will be put with other surgical services across wards 31 and 32, and stroke services will be based on ward 20 instead of ward 23.

The gastroenterology unit will be moved near to other speciality medical wards and the endoscopy unit will stay where it is.
