A FORMER Wombwell chapel will be transformed into a community centre thanks to a £145,000 funding boost.

The plans for the building in Wombwell Cemetery, which date back to 2002, have finally been made possible after the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery secured the cash needed for the project.

The cemetery's grade two listed chapel is set to be restored into a community facility, with schools, groups and members of the public able to access the centre to learn more about Wombwell's heritage and history.

Chairman of the Friends, Mike Bretton, said he hoped to have the project completed and ready for community use by the start of next year.
