A CHARITY football tournament played in memory of a man who collapsed and died on the pitch has raised enough cash to pay for a defibrillator.

Phil Powell, 37, of Cortworth Lane, Wentworth, died after collapsing at the 5ives Community Sports Club in Hunningly Lane, Kendray, last year.

Mr Powell, 37, was playing in a seven a side game when he collapsed. Despite attempts to revive him he died leaving a wife and child.

Earlier this month his friends and family arranged the charity tournament. Ross Logan of 5ives paid tribute to all those who took part.

He said: "The tournament was a great success with food stalls and football games which raised the £1,500 which was needed to buy the defibrillator.

"This bit of kit will be stored at the centre and is available for all local groups to use in case of any incidents in future."

Mr Powell's friend Lee Beck was instrumental in organising the event. Lee is the grandson of Alan Beck who formed the Fast Riders group which organised many charity events during the 1970s and 80s.

Lee said: "Thanks to everyone for making this such a success.

"If we did half as well as the Fast Riders did then we can be be very pleased."
