BARNSLEY Independent Alzheimer's and Dementia Support has launched a £20,000 appeal to try and save its vital befriending service.

The campaign comes after the charity lost a valuable contract with Barnsley Council to provide a dementia befriending service for the borough.

BIADS's chief officer Linda Pattison had warned that from September, without the £40,000 in contracting income, there is a question mark over what dementia support services it can provide in future.

Linda said: "With help we can continue to offer this vital service. Since 2011 we have recruited and trained 40 volunteers and offered befriending to more than 100 people."
