A BARNSLEY-based charity has reported its biggest ever increase ever in surplus food being diverted from waste - enough to provide snap for 119,050 meals a month.

Figures released on Tuesday reveal the amount of surplus food received by FareShare Yorkshire, which is based at Wombwell, has rocketed, enabling it to divert a precious resource from going to waste while feeding thousands of vulnerable individuals and families.

The charity receives and redistributes 51 tonnes of food every month that might have otherwise been binned or used for energy, a 50 per cent increase from last year.
