Barnsley are seven points adrift of safety in the Championship relegation zone following a 2-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic.

The hosts – who had won one of their previous 17 league games – took an early lead then doubled it in first half stoppage time before Cauley Woodrow pulled one back with 20 minutes left.

The second-bottom visitors hit the frame of the goal three times and were the better team in open play but were caught out by set pieces.

Gerhard Struber made two changes from the team that lost in the FA Cup at Portsmouth a week ago, with injured pair Marcel Ritzmaier and Brad Collins replaced by Sami Radlinger and Alex Mowatt, while Elliott Simoes and Jack Walton were brought onto the bench.

The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute when a free-kick was flicked on by the head of Jason Pearce for the unmarked Lyle Taylor who volleyed into the bottom right corner from close range.

The Reds came very close to levelling midway through the first half when Clarke Oduor’s impressive left-wing free-kick was headed towards goal by Mads Andersen but goalkeeper Dillon Phllips brilliantly clawed the ball out of his bottom right corner then Aapo Halme hit the post from a tight angle two yards out.

Those were the only chances in the first 45 minutes, other than a few harmless long-range efforts at either end, as Charlton had a territorial advantage without looking dangerous from open play.

Another set piece undid Barnsley just before the break when Alfie Doughty’s right-wing corner was headed by Pearce to Naby Sarr who swung at the ball from six yards out but miskicked and it fell perfectly for the unmarked Andre Green who smashed in from 12 yards out.

The hosts nearly added a third set piece goal in the first minute of the second half when Josh Cullen’s corner was headed towards goal at the back post by Darren Pratley but Sami Radlinger stopped it on his line.

Barnsley were agonisingly close to pulling one back when Andersen’s long-range shot was blocked by the chest of Phillips then Cauley Woodrow smashed the rebound against the top of the left post from 14 yards out. Charlton’s Cullen then glanced a header from Green’s cross well wide.

Struber made a double change midway through the second half with full-backs Jordan Williams and Oduor being replaced by Simoes and Kilian Ludewig who played as a right wing-back with Brown the left wing-back in a 3-5-2 which matched Charlton’s formation.

Woodrow was moved up front and soon pulled a goal back as Thomas, who was playing in central midfield, ran from near halfway and played in his team-mate who smashed the ball across Phillips and in from the left of the box for his 11th of the season.

It was so nearly 2-2 four minutes later as Brown turned in the box before smashing a shot from 15 yards off the crossbar then Ludewig’s effort from the edge of the box looked destined for the bottom left corner before being cleared off the line. That was to be the visitors’ final chance.

AS IT HAPPENED

  • GAME UNDERWAY
  • 15:03pm

It's pretty loud in here, with the home fans chanting 'Lee Bowyer's red and white army' and the visiting fans trying to compete
  • 15:04pm

The first foul of the game is against Aapo Halme for pulling the shirt of Jonny Williams. But the free-kick is overhit and goes out of play
  • 15:07pm

5 First shot of the game is by Barnsley's Luke Thomas, who toe pokes wide from just outside the box after a good run and pass by Brown. Thomas is now down receiving treatment for an injury in the home box
  • 15:08pm

This doesn't look good for Thomas who has been down for more than a minute now
  • 15:08pm

Looks like it was a blood injury because his shirt has been changed. He should be OK to carry on
  • 15:09pm

Yes Thomas is back on the pitch in a fresh new shirt
  • 15:09pm

Sollbauer now commits a foul about 40 yards from goal and gets a talking to from the referee
  • 15:10pm

    GOAL!
    Lyle Taylor opens the scoring
  • 15:11pm

The free-kick given away by Sollbauer is played into the box, headed on and Taylor is free about six yards out to volley it in
  • 15:12pm

That is another set piece goal conceded by the Reds which will infuriate Stuber. He worked on it all week following two set piece goals at Portsmouth
  • 15:13pm

Charlton looked buoyed by that goal and have had most of the possession since
  • 15:15pm

14 Alex Mowatt blazes a shot well over the bar
  • 15:17pm

15 Cauley Woodrow concedes a free-kick on the right touchline. The Reds need to defend better this time
  • 15:17pm

16 The free-kick is cleared but played back in and Green wins a corner off Oduor
  • 15:18pm

16 Alfie Doughty's corner is flicked on by the head of Andersen and goes out for a corner on the other side, the left
  • 15:19pm

17 There's a bit of a scramble after this latest corner and, after Radlinger doesn't grab the ball, Brown heads it out
  • 15:20pm

18 Now Doughty's corner goes over everyone and out for a throw. Barnsley's set piece examination is over, for now
  • 15:20pm

It was strange during that run of corners that Radlinger seemed glued to his line when he could have claimed at least two of them
  • 15:23pm

21 First big chance for the Reds. Oduor's free-kick is headed towards goal but Phillips the goalkeeper makes an outstanding save to claw it out of his bottom right corner then Halme puts the rebound onto the post from a very tight angle two yards out
  • 15:24pm

That was really close to a leveller but excellent goalkeeping
  • 15:24pm

    23 Doughty blasts a free-kick well over
  • 15:28pm

I think that earlier header which drew a great save was by Mads Andersen who is seeking his first Barnsley goal. But it was quite hard to see as a group of players went up together
  • 15:29pm

28 Charlton win a corner but it's a high looping one from the left which is easily cleared
  • 15:32pm

Just over half an hour gone, Charlton have been the better team and most of the action has been in Barnsley's half, but the Reds would be level if not for some superb goalkeeping by Dillon Phillips
  • 15:34pm

    YELLOW CARD
Tom Lockyer booked for fouling Luke Thomas
  • 15:35pm

Charlton are playing a 3-5-2 formation with wing-backs, so Barnsley will be hoping their usual good movement up front gets between the wide players back three. But so far we haven't seen much of the that and most of Chaplin's touches have been in the left back position as he helps out defensively
  • 15:36pm

Sollbauer fouls Taylor on the edge of the box. He was booked for the free-kick that led to the goal and he's a bit fortunate not to be sent off
  • 15:36pm

35 The free-kick is hit from 20 yards by Cullen and it is low but weak, straight into the arms of Radlinger
  • 15:40pm

Another foul by Sollbauer. He is so so close to a second yellow and a red card here. Surely Struber must be thinking about taking him off?
  • 15:41pm

Most of the tackles Sollbauer has made have been very clumsy and caused a foul. The crowd and the home players are baying for him to get another booking after he received one in the ninth minute
  • 15:42pm

    YELLOW CARD
Mads Andersen joins his centre-back partner in the book. This one looked harsh as he went up for a header with Taylor who tumbled to the floor on the right wing
  • 15:44pm

42 Charlton make a mess of a free-kick they try to play short and Barnsley break. Thomas does very well down the left wing and his cross field pass finds Brown on the right of the box, he passes to Chaplin who is tackled then Halme blazes over from 25 yards
  • 15:47pm

There will be four minutes of added time in this first half.
  • 15:48pm

45+1 Adam Matthews beats Oduor to a free-kick and wins a corner off Andersen
  • 15:49pm

    GOAL!
    Andre Green doubles the lead
  • 15:51pm

Alfie Doughty’s right-wing corner was headed by Pearce to Naby Sarr who swung at the ball from six yards out but miskicked and it fell perfectly for the unmarked Andre Green who smashed in from 12 yards out.
  • 15:51pm

Disaster for the Reds. Two goals from set pieces
  • 15:52pm

    HALF-TIME: Charlton 2, Barnsley 0

    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
  • 16:07pm

46 Charlton win a corner on the left. It goes to the back post when Pratley heads it and it looks as though Radlinger has to push it away on his line
  • 16:09pm

    Attendance: 19,870 (1083 from Barnsley)
  • 16:11pm

That's a really good effort by the away fans but they haven't had much to cheer about so far
  • 16:14pm

Barnsley so close to pulling one back! Andersen lets fly from 25 yards and it seems to swerve before getting to Phillips who can only block with his chest. The ball goes back to Woodrow 12 yards out and he smashes it against the top of the left post
  • 16:14pm

So that's twice Andersen has been denied by the goalkeeper then a team-mate on the rebound has hit the frame of the goal
  • 16:17pm

57 Another chance for Charlton as Cullen heads a Green cross well wide
  • 16:18pm

  • 16:32pm

    GOAL!
    Cauley Woodrow pulls one back!
  • 16:33pm

It's a good finish from the right of the penalty area after an excellent run by Thomas who ran from about halfway then passes to Woodrow who now has 11 goals this season
  • 16:36pm

74 Incredible, Barnsley hit the goal frame for the third time. This time it is Jacob Brown who turns in the box before clattering a 15-yard shot off the cross then Ludewig's effort from the edge of the area is cleared off the line
  • 16:39pm

78 Mowatt's free-kick from the right wing flashes across the face of goal and is given as a corner which is then cleared

86Andersen meets the corner with a header which loops well up and is caught by Phllips
  • 16:50pm

;Luke Thomas has been one of Barnsley's better players today, with many driving runs from the halfway line deep into Charlton territory. One leads to a throw in but they cannot get the ball in the box with the centre-backs up and now Charlton have it
  • 16:50pm

Charlton's last change sees Ben Purrington come on for Alfie Doughty
  • 16:51pm

  • 16:58pm
