A businessman has written more than 500 reviews of restaurants, hotels and attractions on the website Trip Advisor.

The website has named Chris Hobson, 46, of West Bretton, its top reviewer of 2013, after he wrote more than anyone else in the country.

Chris says he has had threats from business owners where he has written bad reviews.

"One restaurant owner told me if I didn't take it down, there would be 'physical consequences'."

He refused to take it down and replied to the message in a 'polite manner' explaining the reasons for his review.

He said about 80 per cent of his reviews are complimentary, because he usually chooses places to go where he has looked at the reviews in advance.

He said: "I'm not one of those people who goes into places with the 'white gloves on' just to write a review.

"I travel and work away, and eat out a lot. I often entertain clients."

He has written more than 750 reviews in total from all over the world and doesn't plan to slow down.

"I do enjoy it. It started out that I'd check the reviews on Trip Advisor to suss out the best places to go.

"I started writing my own reviews, and I suppose I got a little carried away."

He said he saw a story a year ago about the most prolific review writer of 2012, and thought he'd see if he could write the most this year.

"I didn't seriously think I would, but it turns out I did."

He says his favourite restaurant in the Barnsley area is the Indian Cardamom Lounge on Doncaster Road, Kendray.

"It's no coincidence that it's the top rated restaurant in Barnsley on Trip Advisor."
