AT the ripe old age of 104 Clarice Brooke doesn’t need her daughter to visit her any more - they are both residents in the same care home.

So when Clarice celebrated her 104th birthday on Tuesday, 75-year-old daughter Christine Wood didn’t have far to travel to wish her happy birthday.

It is highly unusual for a mother and daughter to live together in a care home and none of the staff at Rockley Dene Residential Home, Worsbrough Bridge, have never heard of it before.

“They’re a great double act,” said activities manager Lee Garner. “We’re really glad to have them here, they’re always having us laughing.

“We think Clarice is one of the oldest residents in Barnsley, but she’s still very sharp.”

Christine, formerly of Strafford Grove, Birdwell, moved into the home a few months ago and enjoyed living with her mother once again.

“We have got separate rooms at least, so we don’t argue,” she said.

“I let things get to me, but she doesn’t. She’s always just said let it go, don't let things get to you, and I think that’s why she’s lived to 104.

“I also think it’s watching sport which has kept her mind active, kept her sharp.”

Clarice loves watching football, cricket and tennis, and has always been a big Manchester United fan.

“Since Fergie’s retired, she has lost interest a bit,” said Christine.

Clarice has two children, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild due in January.

Granddaughter Laura Chantrey, 36, said: “She’s really kept herself active and it’s only in the last couple of years she’s slowed down a bit.

“I remember she was well into her 80s when she was taking us and her other grandkids down into the woods, making rope swings and things.

“She was still making her own bread right into her 90s.”

Great-granddaughter Bryony Beardsall, nine, said: “She’s the best grandma ever.”
