A FATHER of a young boy who suffered a rare type of stroke last year has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award for his fundraising work.

Christopher Hall, 40, of Galway Close, Royston, was inspired to raise money for his son’s football team, Redfearns JFC, after they stood by him following his diagnosis.

“The way they looked after him that first game, the way they understood. That’s why I decided to help the club,” Christopher said.

Riley was six when he had a stroke in March last year. He had just been scouted by Barnsley FC and his chances of playing football ever again were uncertain. His teammates and coaches kept him involved by asking him to coach and ensuring he was protected from risky tackles when he played his first game back.

As a thank you to the team, Christopher has decided to undertake a sponsored bike ride from Scarborough to the Redfearns pitch in Monk Bretton. Twelve other people are currently on board to cycle the route with him.

“I’ve only been riding for four months. It’s kind of a kickstart for me. I’ve had health issues with blood clots and let myself go,” he said.

“I chose cycling because of my own health issues. I can’t do running because of the impact on knees.”

Christopher estimates more than £2,000 in total has been raised so far from online fundraising and raffles. The money will be used to refurbish the clubhouse with the hopes other community groups will also be able to use it. However, he has the fundraising bug now and plans to undertake more sponsored events.

“After the clubhouse is done, there’ll be someone else who needs help. I had meningitis when I was young and nearly died and I’ve always wanted to raise money for that.”

“I’m humbled to be nominated,” he added. “There’s no other reason I’m raising money, I just wanted to help.”

The sponsored ride will take place tomorrow. A fun day is planned at Redfearns sports ground which will be fundraising and greeting the cyclists when they arrive.
