BARNSLEY ShopAbility - which hires out mobility scooters to elderly and disabled people - is to close at the end of March due to funding cuts.

The ShopAbility shop in Cheapside, near the Alhambra, offers scooter and wheelchair hire as well as a befriending service, community car scheme, personal and home shopping.

Nigel Roberts, 51, is project co-ordinator for the ShopAbility shop and runs it with help from about 12 volunteers. He is set to lose his job with its closure.

He said: "The council has slashed our funding by three quarters. We have 28 scooters and 420 people who have signed up for 12 months to use the scooter hire service."
