A CLOSURE plan has been announced for Monk Bretton Library after it emerged it is in need of repairs costing over £130,000.

The crumbling building needs repair, it does not have proper wheelchair access and has seen the number of visitors in the past 12 months plummet.

Starting on Monday a four weeks consultation process will be held asking library users how they would be affected if the library closed and was replaced with either a small book collection based at Silverdale community centre or by the mobile library.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokeswoman, said: "We want to continue to provide a library service for the people who live in Monk Bretton.

"Unfortunately, the current library building is no longer fit for purpose. At this time when the council is facing significant cuts, we simply do not have the funds available."

She said there has also been a decrease of more than 50 per cent in the number of people using the library over the past year.

People can take part in the consultation, which ends of August 9, by picking up a copy from Monk Bretton Library.
