A PROFESSIONAL business club has elected its first ever female president after running for almost 50 years.

The Probus Club in Barnsley, which was founded in 1972, is a local version of the international association of retired and semi-retired people who come together and provided regular opportunities for members to meet others in similar circumstances.

Now in its 46th year, the club has elected its first woman president in Susan Hawley.

Susan said: “I am immensely proud to be the first woman to be elected president of Barnsley Probus Club and pleased to be supported by the membership, especially by past president, now speaker finder, Peter Whitehead.

“Peter has produced many excellent speakers and has a full programme for 2019.”

The club has several topics planned for the new year already including aspects of Japan, Sheffield in Tudor and Stuart times, liquorice and siege of Leningrad.

n The club meets at the Civic every other Wednesday starting next week from 10am until noon.
