A COMMEMORATIVE bench has been placed in a social club so members can remember a much-loved barman.

Robert Royston was the barman at Elsecar Sports and Social Club, on Armroyd Lane, for 25 years.

Robert died from cancer on November 17 last year at the age of 59.

Because he was so well-known, members of the football clubs, cricket club and social club contributed towards a commemorative wooden bench in his honour.

The bench will be situated in the social club over the winter and moved outside to the sports field in the summer and was unveiled at a presentation to Rob’s family on Sunday evening, the first anniversary of his death.

Jim Beachill, the president of Elsecar Cricket Club and the chairman of Elsecar Sports and Social Club, said: “He was a great barman although renowned for being grumpy. But he was well respected and got on with everyone. His family were touched by the bench.”
