BARNSLEY is the last place you might expect to see exotic creatures and wild animals, but that might be about to change with the exciting news that the town could soon be getting its very own zoo.

The news broke when Barnsley College made an application for a zoo licence.

If the licence is granted it will allow the college to accommodate a broader range of animals it keeps at Wigfield Farm in Haverlands Lane, Worsbrough.

The planned zoo is the vision of Wigfield Farm centre manager Wendy Wann.

She told the Chronicle: "The licence would initially enable the farm to look at acquiring wallabies, reindeer, skunks, tapir, racoons and marmosets.

"These would allow us to give our learners hands on experience and help us to engage with the local community."
