BARNSLEY College is giving people the chance to further their English and maths skills for nothing.

The functional skills courses are designed to improve reading, writing and numeracy, and will be available for anyone aged 19 or older.

The courses will run over summer, and focus on vital everyday skills such as spelling, form filling, note writing, and dealing with money. It is designed to make operating in everyday life more comfortable for the students.

They are available for entry level one or two, with completion of the latter meaning students will be able to study for their GCSEs following the course.

There are two options available for those wanting to attend the courses, with an intensive week-long course on offer, as well as a more flexible schedule which will see students attend the Church Street college for a set number of days per week over summer.

Andra Ghencea, interim head of department for English and maths said: “These courses will provide students with the opportunity to gain their English and maths qualifications over the summer and be GCSE ready by September. This will prepare them for their next step whether that be career progression or further study.”
