A COMMUNITY group which aims to make the area of Stairfoot a nicer place to live has unveiled its latest completed project.

The Friends of Stairfoot hosted a celebration event where they revealed a new seating area which the group, along with many other volunteers, have worked on over the past few weeks.Local residents, Twiggs Clean and Green team, Councillor Wayne Johnson, members of the Central Area Council team, local businesses and residents of Highgrove Care Home together with the Friends of Stairfoot worked to transform the overgrown area around the bottom of Stanley Road.

All of the overgrown greenery was cut down, weeds were dug out, a litter pick took place, the fences were painted, plants were put into boxes built by the Men’s Shed group and a new bench was installed.

Lisa Hammond, a member of the Friends of Stairfoot group, said: “It’s gone from a depressing sad space to somewhere that’s enjoyable to sit and watch the world go by.

“We’ve had local residents thank us saying it has transformed that area and since the work was completed, as I’ve passed by, on many occasions I’ve seen people sat enjoying the space and it fills me with pride.

“We are here to try and make a difference and to make our area a better place for all to enjoy. That’s our aim and we will continue with our hard work.”

The next project that the Friends of Stairfoot have lined up is the area on Hoyle Mill Lane near the old Beatson site.

It is currently a hotspot for flytipping and there is a lot of graffiti, litter, weeds and overgrown bushes in the area and the group hopes to transform into a nice place for local people to visit.
