A BYLAW banning drinking in the town centre should be considered by Barnsley Council to help crackdown on antisocial behaviour, according to a leading voice in the business community.

Owen Gleadall, chairman of Barnsley Voice - a town centre group which aims to promote and support retailers - said he had championed the idea when he was president of the Chamber of Commerce, but it was felt then that the problem was not ‘significant enough to warrant going through that process’.

He said: “It is a big problem. When the Heart (pub) changed into the Lemon Tree we thought it would stop and more somewhere else but it hasn't.”
