FRESH concerns over speeding motorists have been raised as hundreds have signed a petition urging for adequate safety measures on a hotspot road.
Dearne Valley Parkway has been the site of frequent accidents and near misses as anti-social motorists use the stretch of road through Brampton, Hemingfield and Hoyland as a race track.
And residents of Hemingfield, who discuss village matters in a 1,000-strong Facebook group, ‘Our Hemingfield’, have backed an online petition to raise awareness of a need for greater measures on the road.
Local man Joshua Kent, who set up the petition on the group’s behalf, said: “This is happening at 11.30pm until 2am or 3am the next morning.
“They speed through our village, which is full of parked cars, like a circuit.If you want to go racing, organise a meet-up at a race track.”
In the last month, neighbourhood police have stepped up patrols on the road.
While a spokesman said most motorists they spoke to were ‘well-behaved car enthusiasts’, others have been issued with anti-social behaviour orders and fined for speeding.
Car enthusiasts have regularly used Cortonwood retail park as a place to socialise and discuss their cars, with most of these judged to be abiding by the rules.
