A CHARITY concert is being held tonight to try and recoup some of the more than £1,200 lost by a young mum conned by a cruel trickster posing on social media as one of her idols.

Megan Riley has long been a huge fan of local comedy songwriter Dave Cherry, who she befriended on Facebook.

When she received a message she thought was from him on Facebook last month she ended up being conned, later learning Dave’s Facebook account had been hacked and a fraudster was merely posing as him.

Dave has since been contacted by a friend Paul Hilton who suggested organising a concert to help her out.

Paul benefited from the kindness of strangers earlier this year when people rallied round to raise money for him after an arson attack killed all his flock of white doves and destroyed his allotment.

“Paul doesn't know the lass but he decided he just wanted to give something back,” said Dave, 72, of Saxon Crescent, Worsbrough Bridge.

“I don’t know how much we’ll raise, it would be good to get it all back for her, but I have a saying ‘half a loaf’s better than nowt’.”

The concert is at Harborough Hill Club, Vernon Street, tonight at 8pm. It will feature Dave as well as guitar vocalist Jimmy Echo, The ex Butlins comic Steve Riley, The Dodworth vocalist Judy Collins, Barnsley vocalist Les Gaines and the compere former footballer and vocalist Ronnie Steele.
