Conor Hourihane is hoping to take his goal tally to double figures as soon as possible.

The central midfielder is Barnsley's top-scorer after smashing in five goals in his last five league games, each from more than 25 yards.

"I'm definitely looking at double figures and hopefully I get the next five as quickly as the first five," said the 23-year-old Irishman. "I told Danny (Wilson, the manager) at the start of the season that I'm a goal-scoring midfielder so it's pleasing to repay him a bit. Everything I seem to hit from outside the box is going in."

Hourihane got his fourth and fifth of the season after Barnsley had gone 5-0 down at home to MK Dons on Saturday. But afterwards, the summer signing from Plymouth was thinking about a shot from close range which hit the post at 0-0 on 16 minutes. "It would have made it a different game if I had scored that. I keep telling myself that I missed the easiest and most important of the three but I can't be too hard on myself if I keep scoring goals. The international break probably came at a bad time for us. We were a bit sloppy, conceded some poor goals and suddenly we were 5-0 down.

"Our three goals put a bit of the gloss on it and 5-3 isn't too bad for people looking at the scoreline."

Hourihane started alongside Brad Abbott who struggled and was replaced at half-time by fellow 19-year-old Paul Digby who gave away two goals.

Conor said: "They are young lads and they will learn as they go along. They are both good players and will bounce back. We're a young team in general but we'åre improving."

Wilson is delighted with his summer purchase. He added: "Conor has had a fantastic start. He gives you an extra string to your bow. Someone who can hit it like that needs closing down and that gives space to other players which hopefully they can take advantage of. Conor is one of those lads who will be proud of his two goals (on Saturday) but more disappointed with the result."
